Liberty Hall Overview
Discover a treasure trove of American history at The Museum at Liberty Hall!
An understanding of history and nature is deepened through the lens of the people who lived it in a 250-year span. Explore a revolutionary-era home that grew into a 50-room mansion. Trace one family’s history through furnishings, decorative arts, clothing, and so much more. Listen to fascinating stories and legends that make Liberty Hall one of New Jersey’s most treasured historic homes. The exquisite arboretum and gardens, which highlight an artistic array of historical horticulture, including some of New Jersey’s oldest trees.
Liberty Hall stands at the center of the American Revolution and home to governors, congressmen, senators, assembly persons, philanthropists, and entrepreneurs. Its plush gardens have spurred civic change and social innovation for centuries. Inhabited by William Livingston, New Jersey’s first elected governor and a signer of the United States Constitution, the 14-room Georgian-style home evolved over time into a 50-room Victorian mansion. Visitors can explore the collections of antique furniture and decorative artifacts by seven generations, including the Livingston and Kean families, who called Liberty Hall home.
About the Day at Liberty Hall
The day includes:
Museum educators dressed in period clothes will guide students on a time travel adventure through six different generations:
1780s; 1820s; 1860s; 1900s; 1940s; and 1980s
Through artifacts, reproductions, and hands-on activities, students will explore how life has changed for children at Liberty Hall by comparing lighting, transportation, communication, technology, clothing, music, and toys.
⦿ Code Book Workshop
Students will learn about the role of spy networks during the American Revolution. Each student will create their own codebook and decipher a message from George Washington using a real Revolutionary-era code.
*Please note this trip is designed for multi-level students K-12th grade
This trip includes a tour, workshop, lunch, and gift shop. It runs from 10:00 am to 1:30 pm.

Additonal Information
- There is a 10 student minimum for this trip
- Arrive at least 15 minutes early to ensure the tour starts on time
- Lunch space is available, so please bring a bagged lunch
- The Museum at Liberty Hall is part of the Passport to Your National Parks program. When you visit, bring your passport and get it stamped!
- Parking is free
- Time for lunch and a visit to the gift shop is built into the tour time
- Liberty Hall walkways are gravel, and the mansion is not ADA-compliant at this time, though it is being addressed.
